Fabrique des Lumières
This building is completely backwards – what once created light to illuminate Amsterdam's dark streets now plunges you into darkness to show light in ways never imagined before. You're standing outside the former Westergasfabriek, where back in 1883, the British Imperial Continental Gas Association built this massive gasworks to literally keep Amsterdam from going dark at night. Here's what most people miss – see those triangular metal frames jutting from the red and yellow brick facade? Architect Isaac Gosschalk designed those in 1885 to free up precious roof space, and they're still doing their job today. The Dutch Neo-Renaissance style you're looking at was built to be both beautiful AND industrial – pretty revolutionary for a gas factory. Step inside and you'll discover those towering 17-meter walls that once housed coal storage now serve as canvases for over 100 state-of-the-art projectors. Since April 2022, this place has become the Netherlands' largest digital art center, where Van Gogh's brushstrokes literally dance around you and Klimt's golden spirals swirl overhead. The same brick walls that once produced gas to light street lamps now host moving masterpieces that more than three million people have experienced worldwide.
Did You Know?
- Fabrique des Lumières occupies a historic 19th-century gasworks built in 1885 by the Imperial Continental Gas Association, originally the largest coal-fired gas plant in Amsterdam and a key part of the city’s early street lighting infrastructure—the building’s Dutch Neo-Renaissance architecture now provides a dramatic, 17-meter-high canvas for immersive digital art projections.
- The venue uses around 100 high-definition video projectors and a sophisticated spatial sound system to transform the cavernous industrial space into a dynamic, multi-sensory art experience—classical masterpieces by artists like Van Gogh and Mondrian are not just displayed but ‘brought to life’ through moving images and music that envelop visitors from floor to ceiling.
- Managed by Culturespaces, the same team behind Paris’s acclaimed Atelier des Lumières, Fabrique des Lumières is the largest digital art center in the Netherlands and regularly features not only classic and modern art but also dedicated spaces for contemporary digital creations, making it a unique bridge between Amsterdam’s industrial heritage and cutting-edge cultural innovation.
